Your NGO does great work and creates real impact. But you still struggle to get funding. The reason is often not what you are doing. It’s what you are not doing.
Maybe your compliance documents are not updated. Maybe you don’t have a website. Maybe you aren’t sharing updates anywhere. These things may seem small, but they matter to funders. When a funder cannot find the information they need, they don’t always ask questions. They simply move on to another NGO.
These are the three silent killers.
The Compliance Killer
The problem is the documents you are missing or have not updated. For example, your 80G certificate may have expired, your FCRA registration may not be active, your latest audit report may not be available, or your annual report may be missing from your website. Many of these things can be checked online. If something is missing or out of date, a funder may wonder whether your organisation is able to stay on top of its compliance requirements and, by extension, its reporting.
The Visibility Killer
Today, almost every funder searches for an NGO online before replying to an email or reading a proposal. If they cannot find your website, if your LinkedIn or Facebook page has not been updated in years, or if links to your reports do not work, they have very little to evaluate you on. Good work that cannot be found is often overlooked.
The Narrative Killer
Doing good work is not enough. Funders also need to see it. If your website and social media do not show recent impact stories, numbers, photos, case studies, or programme updates, funders cannot understand the difference your organisation is making. If you don’t tell your story, no one else will tell it for you.
The reality is that none of these killers are about the quality of your work. They are about your organisation’s visibility, credibility, and preparedness. If these are missing, your organisation may appear too risky to fund from the outside.
So, before you write another proposal or send another cold email to a funder, take a look at your compliance, online presence, and documentation. Funders can only assess what they see, so make sure they can see the great work your organisation does. Let your impact speak for itself—you just have to make it visible.
